Gabel was originally a shortstop with the Brownie A.C. in 1930, then switched to the outfield in '38 with the Krogers of the South Side' League, batting .500.

He coached Khoury League teams for nine years, junior American Legion ball for 12 and served on the state Legion baseball commission for eight years.
