St. Louis Browns Historical Society and Fan Club

St. Louis Browns Historical Society and Fan Club
J. Kim Tucci Legacy Award 2018

The St. Louis Browns Historical Society, popularly known as the Browns Fan Club was created in 1984 by Bill Borst to celebrate and remember the legacy of the St. Louis Browns, an American League baseball team that called this city home for fifty-two years. Their tenure was marked by more losses than wins and a portfolio of gimmicks and shenanigans. Overshadowed by the near–dynasty exploits of their city mate Cardinals, the Browns were sold off and limped east to Baltimore in 1954.

In the words of Oriole management, “… our history was tied into the long history of Baltimore Orioles baseball, not St. Louis baseball … the Browns belonged to St. Louis, and that’s where their memory, as Browns, should rest in peace.” And so it is that the St. Louis Browns Historical Society shall own and maintain that memory.

Despite the worst overall franchise record in baseball history, the Browns legacy is also built on sometimes near great teams, hall of fame players, and overall colorful stories of such that they could not be made up by an author’s pen. It is a team that today is held dear and near to not just the St. Louis community, but the world of baseball.

While other fan clubs were initially formed to support relocated teams, few remain intact and none to the unprecedented level of success as the Browns Fan Club. What started as small informal gatherings grew into formal dinners and events with today over 500 members across the country. As former Brownie players have passed and only twelve of the 764 men who wore the orange and brown flannels are still with us, the Fan Club continues strong today with a resurgence of their memories buoyed by a recently published award winning book: The St. Louis Browns – the Story Of A Beloved Team and an outstanding PBS documentary: The St. Louis Browns – The Team Baseball Forgot recently aired across the nation ensuring that this team and their legacy will live and always be remembered.
