A dominant right-handed pitcher, Boehringer played in the Major Leagues for ten years. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in 1990 while playing for the UNLV Rebels at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. In 1991, he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox and he played in their farm system until he was traded to the New York Yankees in 1994. He was a pitcher for the Yankees from 1995 to 1997, helping them win the World Series in 1996. Boehringer pitched in two games of the 1996 World Series. The Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves in six games. He made two appearances in the 1996 American League Division Series, winning Game Two.

During the expansion draft of 1997, he was sent to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays who traded him to the San Diego Padres. He pitched for the Padres from 1998 to 2000. In 1998, he pitched in the World Series which the Padres lost to the New York Yankees in four games. He had three scoreless innings in the 1998 National League Championship Series.

Boehringer became a free agent and rejoined the Yankees in 2001. He also pitched for the San Francisco Giants in 2001. He was granted free agency once again, and he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2002 to 2004.

After leaving the Major Leagues, Boehringer pitched for three prominent minor league teams: the Omaha Royals, the Toledo Mud Hens, and the Bridgeport Bluefish. In 2014, he became a professional baseball scout with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Boehringer grew up in the St. Louis area. He pitched for Northwest High School in House Springs and also Meramec Community College. He was a standout pitcher for the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. He sometimes appears as a guest host on ESPN Sports Talk Radio in St. Louis.
