A right-handed center fielder, Wood played in the Mon-Clair League for sixteen seasons from 1979 to 1994. His team reached the playoffs in twelve of those years. He was with the Shiloh Blue Sox from 1979 to 1982. He played for Highland-Pierron from 1983 to 1987, guiding his team to the league championship series in 1983 and 1984. He won the league batting title in 1983 with a .466 average. He was on the Highland Merchants from 1988 to 1991 and the O’Fallon Merchants from 1992 to 1994. He was a player-manager for both those teams. Wood was selected to thirteen Mon-Clair League all-star teams. He was a .370 career hitter in the Mon-Clair League. In 2010, Wood was inducted into the Mon-Clair Baseball League Hall of Fame.
From 1980 to 1983, Wood was a star center fielder for Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. His career batting average at SEMO was .345 and his on-base percentage was .459. The SEMO Indians won the division championship in 1982 and 1983, advancing to the NCAA tournament in 1983. Wood was named to the All-Conference team in 1983. He was also a Scholar-Athlete at Southeast Missouri State. Wood was an All-Conference player on the baseball team at Lebanon Community High School in Lebanon, Illinois.
For the past fourteen years, he has been connected with the Beckemeyer Eagles baseball team in the Clinton County League in Illinois.
Wood still plays competitively in senior men’s leagues including the St. Louis Baseball Forever League and the St. Louis Men’s Baseball League. He regularly competes in national tournaments in various locations around the country.
