He was an outfielder, catcher, and first baseman who played in the Chicago Cubs farm system from 1978 to 1980. He started out with the Cubs farm team in the Gulf Coast League. In 1979, he moved to the Quad Cities farm team in the Midwest League. In 1980, he helped Quad Cities win the Midwest League championship. He advanced to the Triple A level in 1980 with the Wichita Aeros. Later that year, he became an all-star catcher for the Geneva Cubs in New York-Pennsylvania League.
Rohlfing played for Valmeyer High School in the early 1970s.
He starred for Belleville Area College in 1975 and 1976. In 1976, he was named MVP after Belleville Area College won the JUCO state championship.
From 1976 to 1978, Rohlfing played for Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Rohlfing played for the Valmeyer Lakers in the Mon-Clair League for almost twenty years. He was an outfielder, catcher, and first baseman. He was with the Lakers from 1973 to 1978 before playing minor league ball. He returned to the Lakers in 1981 and remained with them until 1993. He was the power hitting leader of numerous Valmeyer championship teams. He was selected to ten Mon- Clair League all-star teams. He was MVP of the 1978 Valmeyer Fourth of July tournament. Valmeyer won three Mon-Clair League championships. In 1998, Rohlfing was inducted into the Mon-Clair Baseball League Hall of Fame.
From 2008 to 2016, he worked for Rick Strickland’s St. Louis Pirates as a catching coach and traveling team coach. Rohlfing was also an instructor at Ric Lessmann’s baseball clinic.
Wayne's brothers Allyn and Ron are also members of this Hall of Fame.
