Scott was a college umpire for the past 20 years. From 1984-87, he umpired over 500 games in the minor leagues. Wilkerson is currently umpiring Division I baseball in the Big 12 Conference and Conference USA.

An outstanding baseball and football player during his playing days, Wilkerson graduated from Oakville High School and later attended Tulane University in New Orleans. From 1980-83, he was a catcher at Meramec Community College and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, respectively. He played in the Division II World Series in 1983.
