Carr began his career in the CYC League as an outfielder with Our Lady of Presentation. After four years, he moved to the strong University City League and played center field for Shearer Chevrolet. He went away professionally with the Leavenworth Braves in the Western Association and, after one year, returned to play at Heman Park for clubs like Pelligren, Wright Nash and Schaffer Lounge. Dick later played for the Manchester club In the St. Louis County League. A solid .350 hitter from the left side, Carr played for 15 seasons.
