An overpowering right-handed pitcher, Harris played in the farm system of the Minnesota Twins for two seasons. In 1980, he pitched in the Appalachian League for the Elizabethton Twins in Tennessee. In 1981, he was selected to the all-star team as a member of the Wisconsin Rapids Twins in the Midwest League.

Harris pitched for Fox High School from 1973-76. In 1977-78, he starred on the mound for Jefferson Community College, ranking among the best junior college players in the nation. Both years, he finished in the top 10 in strikeouts.

In 1979-80, Harris pitched for Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas. He only lost two games during those two seasons and hurled a no-hitter in 1979.

Harris posted a 9-1 record with the St. Louis Browns in 1979. The Browns won the Metro-Collegiate league championship that year. From 1982-87, Harris starred for the St. Louis Sotolar Pointers in the CYC Major League. He only lost eight games during those six years and pitched a no-hitter in 1983. The following season, he was named CYC Major League Pitcher of the Year after compiling a 13-1 record. That year, he struck out 19 batters during a five-hit shutout at the NBC Missouri State tournament. Four of those hits were by former Cardinal standout Ken Reitz.

Harris coached youth baseball teams in the St. Louis area for many years.
