“Johnny Mac” is being honored as an umpire, but he could have easily been chosen under any of the other categories. A class official, he umpired in the Big Eight for 20 years and another 25 years in high school and college. Johnny also umpired for 11 years in the Heine Meine Semi Pro League and did work in the Metro, Ban Johnson, County and American Legion Leagues.
His involvement in baseball started in the early 1940s when he was an active player for 12 years. McArthur was an infielder on powerhouse clubs like Kutis, Borbein-Young, McMahon and other teams. He also played military service ball for Camp Hood, Texas. As a promoter of amateur baseball, Johnny Mac can claim the Japanese American Legion VIP Fair Exhibition. He also constructed the Johnny Mac Sports Complex.
McArthur has been president of many baseball leagues and is a frequent guest speaker in amateur baseball’s interest. Johnny Mac was also a team sponsor for many clubs – total dedication to sports – it’s only natural that he would go on to own and operate Johnny Mac’s Sporting Goods retail stores.
