The story of Lowther, a physician and amateur baseball player, received great coverage in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and was condensed slightly and distributed nationally in the Medical Tribune. Physical fitness through baseball over almost three decades is noteworthy for longevity, but Gerry played skillfully and with outstanding clubs. A left-handed hitting infielder, his career began with the Khoury Leagues, continued with American Legion ball with Aubuchon-Dennison, and Senior League ball in the CYC in 1954, 1955 and 1956. Lowther played in the military service in 1967, playing second base on the Army Championship team at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He was selected to the All-Post team that year. Before and after military service, Gerry played for Giesler-Jorgen, a team that was either champions or co-champions of the St. Louis County League 12 times and NBC Missouri State Champions in 1969. He was selected a St. Louis County All-Star 13 times and made the NBC Missouri All State Team in 1970.
