Fred was the Director of Municipal Athletics for the City of St. Louis. He was also president and Organizer of Gateway for Youth (Housing Projects). As Director of the Davis Street Community Center Geldmacher initiated baseball programs for Southside youths. He was Chairman of the sports program, celebrating the founding of Carondelet’s Centennial which featured baseball at Carondelet Park and Heine Meine Field.
Geldmacher has been honored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Khoury Leagues, the Clayton Elks, the Municipal Athletic Association and the Carondelet YMCA. Freddie managed the Aubuchon-Dennison American Legion team and organized leagues for his church and the Boy Scouts. With all of his contributions to baseball, he was probably better known as St. Louis’ premier softball pitcher, who was known as “Fireball” Freddie Geldmacher.
