“Red” Flier had a great 14-year career as an outfielder in the strong South Side and South County Leagues. He performed for outstanding teams like Ideal Liquid Heat, Hoffman’s Market, Winheim Market, Schenberg Market, St. Louis Cold Storage and others. Right-handed all the way, Flier had a great arm and was a consistent .350 hitter, leading Walthers and Winheim to County League championships. As the top player in the South Side League, Flier was drafted by the Schenbergs in 1936. He played exhibition ball with major leaguers John Tobin, Heine Meine, “Ace” Elliott, Andy High, Elam Vangelder and others.
