Doug was an overpowering right-handed pitcher for the University of Oklahoma, the Alaskan League and the San Francisco Giants organization. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1972 after graduating from Lindbergh High School. Three years later, he was drafted by the Giants after a solid career pitching for the Oklahoma Sooners. Schaefer spent seven years in the Giants’ system beginning in 1975 with the Great Falls Giants in the Pioneer League. He also pitched for the Fresno Giants (1976-77) in the California League; Waterbury Giants in the Eastern League (1978); and the AAA Phoenix Giants in the Pacific Coast League (1979-81).

In 1972, Schaefer was selected to the Missouri All-State team while pitching high school ball for the Lindbergh Flyers. He led the state in strikeouts with 102 in 55 innings. He was also named All-Conference and All Metro that season.

He pitched three seasons for the Oklahoma Sooners after that and hurled for the Lawton Tigers during the summer of 1973. In the summer of 1974, Doug pitched for the Kenai Oilers in Alaska.

During his career, he had numerous complete games and played the outfield on days when he wasn’t on the mound. He coached high school baseball in the St. Louis area from 1981-83.
