A power-hitting catcher with major league potential. Loehr, a left-handed hitter, averaged 10 home runs a year with a .400 batting average playing for Ballwin in the St. Louis County League. They were County League Champions in 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1959. Loehr was the league’s MVP in 1957 and 1958 and was the starting catcher on the County All-Star Team from 1957 through 1960. He was also selected as Most Valuable Player on the 1954 U.S. Navy team. Red had a shot at professional ball with the Cardinals which was interrupted by a hitch in the Navy between 1952 and 1955. He coached the 1972 Ballwin American Legion team to the National Championship and was honored as Coach of the Year.
